Turning the World Inside Out: 30 Years a Painter: Judy Millar

31 August - 24 September 2016 Lorne Street [2008 - 2021]
Overview

While working on a group of new paintings during the summer of 2015 Judy Millar had a flashback to a work painted almost 30 years earlier. She was struck by the similarity between a work she had painted in 1987 and her new work both in palette and the overlaid drawn line used to establish depth in the image. Comparison between the works revealed the consistency with which she has worked over the past 30 years. It made evident her determined search to find a way to paint paintings that are both abstract and yet full of imagery.

Millar's "Untitled" work of 1987 was first exhibited in Gow Langsford Gallery's inaugural exhibition of the same year. Lady Fletcher purchased it for the Fletcher Collection.

In the exhibition Turning the World Inside Out: 30 Years a Painter we are delighted to have the opportunity to re-exhibit Millar's Untitled 1987 work alongside her new series of work.

The pairing of works from these different periods of Millar's oeuvre will provide the chance to witness her 30 year use of inversion, contradiction and paradox as she has sought to re-embody vision. We can examine her determined quest to find a place where subject and object are free to change position, re-combine and ultimately displace one another - letting us, the viewers, revision and re-imagine the physical world around us.

Millar has stated that she wants "to find the moment our image of the world comes into existence", those moments when our peripheral vision has yet to name objects and pin them down as a tangible "thingness". In this exhibition we will experience her unique relationship to painting, process and vision.
