The photography of Miao Xiaochun links imperial China with the urban elements of today’s Chinese metropolises.   Past cultural achievements become an integral part of contemporary art.  Gow Langsford Gallery presents works from the 2006 Last Judgement in Cyberspace series, a group of black and white digital photographs depicting numerous perspectives of one figure afloat in a groundless sky-scape.  European art history is referenced, as Miao reconstructs the highly-dramatic scenes of Michelangelo’s eponymous fresco using a 3D figure modelled on his  body and developed and multiplied using digital software. “Michelangelo’s fresco fascinates me not only on an artistic level, but also because of the fundamental existential issues that this vision of the Last Judgement raises…including the question that concerns us all: what happens when we die?” (Miao Xiaochun, 2006).

Miao Xiaochun was born in Wuxi Jiangsu.  He studied at the Kunsthochschule, Germany, and presently works with the Department of Photography and Digital Media at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China
