China No. 21, 2005
Feng Zhengjie’s China No. 21 2005, forms part of a suite of works on-going since 2000. Inspired by the popular “kitsch” New Year posters associated with the artists childhood, and the glamour imagery of China’s burgeoning entertainment industry, this work’s striking colour and immaculate paint surface depicts a superficial beauty associated with fantasy and the global pre-occupation with commodity. Reminiscent of Warhol’s screen printed celebrities, Feng’s works are a vision of futuristic pop. His women are hybrids - neither western nor eastern, they are products of both science fiction and reality. Despite their extravagant beauty, their gaze is distant or lost - perhaps a metaphor for the new globalised China and its uncertain future.
Brought up in a small village in the Sichuan Province, Feng Zhengjie lives and works in Beijing. A prolific painter, Feng exhibits in China, Europe, Canada and Australasia.
